Fortunately all is not lost. As you’d expect from the people that brought us Zenonia, Hybrid: Eternal Whisper does contain a staggering amount of content for those willing to stick with it. In addition the combat has incredible potential and the longer you play the game the deeper and deeper it becomes: As you progress you unlock new abilities and new magic spells to unleash on your hapless foes. A single attack button sits in the bottom right corner of the screen enabling you to perform some basic combos. You can then change the grip of your sword with the “grip” button which reveals another set of moves. By timing your attacks and switching your grips it’s possible to chain together colossal sword slash combinations and as you get further into the game blending these with your special attacks can become extremely satisfying. Pair this with the levelling and upgradable skills and you have a very compelling proposition for anyone that loves the exp grind (Monster Hunter fans for example will likely eat this up). If the combat has any technical flaw it is that magic attacks are activated by swiping across the screen in a given direction, unfortunately all too frequently the game would fail to acknowledge our swipes. It’s hardly a game breaker but certainly worth mentioning.
Ultimately your enjoyment of Hybrid: Eternal Whisper is likely to come down to two factors, a) how much time you’re willing to invest in the game and b) your propensity to enjoy level grinding and skill upgrading. If you answered “lots” and “I love level grinding” respectively then you’ll more than likely fall in love with Hybrid. Consider this when making your purchasing decision. This game is likely going to split opinion right down the middle, as exemplified by the high review scores various other sites have given it. We found the narrative and the cut scenes to be eye wateringly tedious. The combat is enjoyable but only after you have dedicated some serious time to upgrades and mastery of the combo system, time that we fear many will be unwilling to commit after the initial hour of the game has finished making it's terrible first impression.
