    Sharing Internet connection

This tip is for those who want to share their LAN cable based internet connection with wifi enabled devices.

    Requirement:
Laptop/PC with wifi adaptor and other gadgets which supports Ad-hoc network on its wifi connection

By following the steps listed below you can make your Laptop(with wifi adapter) or Desktop PC (with wifi adapter) to share the internet connection with other devices like your mobile which has wifi capability. I have illustrated sharing the internet connection between my laptop (running vista) and my Nokia 5800 XM mobile.

    Preparing the Internet share point:

First step is to establish a internet sharing point in your laptop/PC which is already connected to internet via LAN cables. Now create a new network connection by navigating to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center and click on Set up a connection or network in the resulting window select Set up a wireless ad-hoc network and proceed next button,

On the next screen, proceed Clicking Next button, in the next step you have to configure your connections

Provide a valid name for your connection (In my case, i have provided it as Test) and select the Security Type as WEP (This encryption is supported by most of the devices) and provide your Security Key/Passphrase which will be required while connecting to this connection.

If you want to save the connection permanently Check the Save this network option and proceed by clicking Next button

If everything goes fine, in the final step click on the Turn on Internet connection sharing and now you are ready with the setup to connect other devices to your laptop/PC.

    Connecting other device:

Now we can connect the Nokia 5800 XM to the Ad-hoc network connection we created. Proceed to Menu > Settings > Connectivity >Wireless LAN and click on Other (hidden netw.)

    And select Connect

And provide your WLAN network name(in this example the ad-hoc name used is Test)

Now the WLAN scan will be performed and gets failed with No WLAN connection found message

And it will provide the other connections available as listed below, in those select Ad-hoc(pulbic)

Select the security type (In this case, i used WEP)

And provide the Security Key and thats it. You are connected with the network. Now your mobile can share the same LAN cable internet via your laptop/PC.

    Enjoy surfing......

WPA is better than WEP for security

Of course WPA is better but we don't have that protocol support in 5800 XM firmware. So instead of selecting Open connection we can go for WEP.
