How to update my Firmware safely ?

Last time i tried to update my firmware ( n97 firmware ) it went well until i my phone had to restart and then everything went terribly wrong , i got errors , could't open my menu , could get to settings to restore it to factory settings and many more things. I found out it somehow it has installed in to my C drive i think it was my C drive not sure.
Anyways i wanna update my firmware and this time without any problems , how can i do this safely?? and if i do update my firmware to the newest firmware out there what will the changes be? will it make my n97 faster , fixing errors and so on??

You can update via Nokia software updater " It is more safe

Sometimes you have to take risks in order to get somthing good or best for you... But if you want safety then fota is the best option for you...

Use Nokai PC suit and connect phone with it and use firmware update option or in Mobile phone>Settings>Phone>Phone Update option is available. Just connect with Internet and use the option.
